Plant roots are subject to various abiotic stresses that reduce their efficiency in mineral and water nutrition. Using classical genetics, we have identified in the model plant Arabidopsis several genes in a signalling pathway that reduces root growth under iron excess. This growth arrest mechanism is based on root exudation of small organic acids, active oxygen species and cell wall stiffening. We will describe in more detail the regulation of the activity of the STOP1 transcription factor that controls this pathway, which is partly common to other soil stresses such as very acid pH and aluminium toxicity, which pose agronomic problems.
