Yves Bourne is a research director at the CNRS. After a PhD thesis in 1990 at the Aix-Marseille III University entitled “Crystallographic study of the interaction between a legume lectin and various saccharides” under the supervision of C. Cambillau, he joined the LCCMB lab (later renamed AFMB lab) in 1991 with a junior researcher position at the CNRS. In 1994, he joined the team of John A. Tainer at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla (CA, USA) for a 2-year sabbatical position to study cell cycle regulatory proteins. Since 2003 he is the leader, and since 2012 co-leader with Pascale Marchot, of the “Structural Glycobiology and Neurobiology” team of the AFMB lab. Since 2008, he is the director of the AFMB lab (CNRS / Aix-Marseille Université) as a continuation of his adjunct director position in 2007.

He is interested in elucidating the architecture, mainly by x-ray crystallography, of the mode of action of proteins or enzymes acting on glycans but also of synaptic proteins and related complexes with protein or glycoprotein partners. These studies are of biomedical interest and are key to decipher the molecular bases responsible of some disorders linked to protein glycosylation, severe pulmonary infectious diseases or autism spectrum disorders.

He is co-author of about a hundred of peer-reviewed articles and has contributed to more than hundred structures deposited with the Protein Data Bank.
